Horror of Horrors
Heated music haunts

Halloween, the time of year for kids and adults alike to escape from the routine and become someone or something else. A time for the artist inside each of us to be expressed through our physical appearance, which of course means good times, great music, and sexy nurse costumes. But first, the week that hasuhmmalready come andis over. Thursday night kicked off with a superb performance from L.A.-based Maroon 5, at UK's Singletary Center for the Arts. The group is touring in support of their album Songs About Jane, and are rapidly gaining notoriety as a solid rock act.

Elvis Smith made a stop at The Library Lounge Thursday night, while rumors of their doors closing circulated through the scene. The club will no longer be offering nightly live music due to poor turnout and financial loss at many of its shows. Instead, the club will offer live music once a week and will switch from its six-day week format, to modified open hours on Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Stop by the Library and help them stay afloat, we have far too few live music venues in this town.

Friday night felt tremors of the jam band earthquake that hit Lexington Sunday with Louisville-based Bloomstreet, and Lexington's own Orange Whip at High On Rose. Across town at The Dame, funk jam troupe Barnhouse Effect played spectacular. With the opening experimental jam ensemble of Axis.

Saturday saw the King of Slideco himself Sonny Landreth, made a stop at The Dame Saturday night in support of his latest album The Road We're On. Landreth's blues-oriented rock redefined the use of a guitar slide, and captured an intrigued audience.

Lexington's own Ben Lacy dropped the jaws of onlookers as he opened up for the swinging jam sounds of Universal Frequency, at High On Rose. These two acts have often shared a bill together, and when that time comes again, don't miss it. The rhymes of The Wordsmiths echoed through the Riptides Concert Theater at A1A, while the Green Genes show at the Library went on as scheduled. (It's hard to cancel a performance by these jam masters, they always draw a crowd.)

Finally it came, the big day. Even if you've never heard of Widespread Panic, this was a show you would have loved. There's something to say about 18 years of performing live improvisational music. Well lets just say, would you rather be operated on by an experienced surgeon, or my brother in his third year of medical school? The answer is simple, but the music was not, and it was incredible. Widespread Panic were at their best, as they performed in Rupp Arena Sunday night to an excited crowd.

Coming up this weekmore great music brought to you courtesy of your friendly neighborhood music halls. Hallows Eve Thursday or, Devils Night as some have come to know it gets started with a night of classic covers by The Apparitions covering the entire Pink Floyd Animal album at The Dame. The Kentucky String Ticklers will perform at High On Rose, with upcoming Mississippi singer/songwriter Cory Branan who in April played on the Late Show with David Letterman. St. James Gate will play at Cheapside while the Starlight Lounge Live will return to A1A.

Halloween Friday night will see the city overrun with costumed revelers and hopefullysexy nurses as Lexington celebrates the Celtic holiday. Z-Rock 103 will be throwing a Halloween bash like no other at the world famous Continental Inn. The party will feature music and a laser light show. DJ Fish promises the party will be well worth your while to attend and preached the light show as something to tell your kids about.

A1A will have a Pimp N' Ho Ball Halloween night featuring funk cover specialists the G-Funk All Stars, surely to be a pimptastic time. Grateful Dead cover gurus Born Cross Eyed, will perform at The Dame while Phiasco will perform a Phish tribute, featuring members of the Chitara Rhythm Section at High On Rose. Remember that that most clubs are offering free or half priced cover for any patron in a costume, so go get those nurse's outfits and you guys dress as truck drivers or, something.

Saturday night welcomes SoUPFest X to The Dame, with some of the country's finest authors and musicians. The night will feature readings and live music starting at 7, as the landmark event kicks off. Be sure to stop by and celebrate these gifted authors and musicians during a night of relaxation and classic entertainment.

The monster on main will feature a night of solid rock with Spout, and Circle Four Saturday, while rock and roll crooner Lance Whalen will perform with the Ralph Jones Band at High On Rose. Your favorite local country stars will be performing at their respected establishments including the Cadillac Ranch, the Speedway Lounge, and Redmon's. DJ Rice and the Paying Dues Blues Band will perform at Cheapside, mixing dance and grit in the same building.

Have a safe Halloween weekend, and as alwaysSupport Local Music! n
