As American As Cherry Pie

Looking for an excuse to try out that new pie recipe you learned from Emeril on the Food Network? Or maybe it's high time you got some recognition for perfecting that apple pie.

Whatever the reason, bakers of all ages and talents are invited to bring their best baking effort to the Great American Pie Contest in Cheapside Park on Tuesday, July 3.

Categories include a "best of the best," professional, non-professional and even a special award for the prettiest pie.

And although the warmth overflowing your heart would surely be enough of a reward, the bakers of the top three pies in the home-baked category will receive gift certificates from Meijer. (Which means you probably shouldn't go there before the competition, purchase a pie, and take the sticker off of the top.)

For more information or to enter the contest, pick up an entry form at the Government Center, 200 E. Main St. or call Maureen Watson at (859) 258-3112. -Loree Stark

Hello and Goodbye

It's time for Lexington to bid farewell to Hello Records as they move the bulk of their operations to Nashville. The label, which is home to such artists as Pontius CoPilot, Tongue, Household Saints and Phantom Rockers, has provided Lexington with an array of recording options.

According to Hello Records, the move is powered by the growth of key partnerships and relationships with other music business entities in Nashville, making the move a logical next step.

Label president Stepfan Jefferies and Tony Patino plan to remain in Lexington and the company will continue to house offices in Lexington, Nashville and New York City. -LS

Positively Glowing

The war on drugs rages on, and the latest casualties on the government's hit list include such nefarious offenders as glowsticks, pacifiers, dust masks and Vicks VapoRub. Even the slimy, minty goo that has treated the collective chest congestion of America has been victimized.

An injunction handed down last Wednesday to a group of New Orleans party promoters charged that the aforementioned items were to be considered "drug paraphernalia" and their presence on the dance floor is an indicator of illicit drug activity

The promoters have since banned glowsticks, "chill rooms" and massage tables from their clubs in response to the injunction. -LS

Here She Comes

The award for the best Halloween costume in the 8-12 year old division must relinquish its coveted spot on Rhonda Reeves' wall (although we hear she made a wonderful princess).

Bigger and better things are happening.

Reeves has been chosen by the Centre College Alumni Association Board of Directors as the recipient of the Centre College Distinguished Young Alumnus Award, which recognizes outstanding young alumni for their professional achievement, civic accomplishments and/or service to Centre College. (We don't really know what their criteria was, actually. It's just what the letter said.)

Former recipients include prominent Kentucky politico, Crit Luallen. A fellow recipient this year is Jon Conlee, recently nominated for a Tony Award for his Broadway role in The Full Monty.

Reeves will be presented with the award during Homecoming weekend at an Alumni Recognition Luncheon on Saturday, October 13.

She'll be the one in the tiara. –LS

Bullies Be Gone

In an attempt to prevent the pain caused by the bully-ridden battlefield known as high school these days, the Hate Free Schools Coalition of Louisville has launched the Student Pocket Card project.

The business sized card, which has been designed to inform students of their right to attend schools free of harassment and discrimination, defines harassment and lists steps students can take to document, report and get emotional support if they experience harassment.

The Coalition, which includes the Lousiville Youth Group, the Peace Education Program and the Gay and Lesbian Teachers Caucus of Jefferson County Teachers Association among others, produced the card in hopes of educating students about harassment and to encourage them to take a stand. –LS
