THURSDAY Sep 11, 2014

Sommore, whom Oprah Winfrey proclaimed “a force to be reckoned with in the new millennium,” will perform at Comedy Off Broadway Thursday through Saturday. The Thursday show starts at 7:15 pm.

At 7 pm, the Lyric Theatre will host a Sonia Sanchez Series community lecture. The keynote address by Asha Bandele will cover racial and social justice, poetry, and Lexington. Chaired by Patrice Muhammad.

New York Times bestselling author, Hugo Award winner, and author of Lock In John Scalzi will be at Joseph-Beth Booksellers at 7 pm.

Born Cross Eyed will perform at Cheapside Pavillion as part of Thursday Night Live from 4:30 – 7:30 pm.

Trombone Shorty

The UK Singletary Center presents Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue at 7:30 pm. Trombone Shorty and his ensemble play with a mix rock, funk, jazz, hip-hop, and soul. They have toured across five continents and were nominated for a Grammy for “Backatown.”

Marcus Roberts Trio: A Grand Celebration will highlight the return of the Steinway Grand to the Lexington Opera House stage after a complete restoration. At age 21, Roberts began touring with Wynton Marsalis and has stayed with the group for over six years. His work has reached critical acclaim, having reached the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s traditional jazz chart.

The annual Kentucky Women Writers Conference will take place September 12-13. Launched by UK in 1979, the Kentucky Women Writers Conference is the longest actively running women’s literary festival in the nation. On September 12, the Carnegie Center will host a number of readings, discussions, and workshops starting at 8 am. At 7:30 pm, Tracy K. Smith and Tina Chang will present a keynote speech at Memorial Hall.

SATURDAY Sep 13, 2014

The 29th Annual Bike Trek to Shakertown will take place September 13-15. The three-day trek features an overnight stay at the historic Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. The round-trip route begins and ends in Harrodsburg with a Saturday overnight at Danville’s famous Pioneer Playhouse. Proceeds benefit the American Lung Association in the fight against lung disease.

Bluegrass, Bourbon & BBQ: A Bicentennial Celebration will go from 5-9 pm at Gratz Park. The event will feature live bluegrass music, tours of the Hunt-Morgan House and the Bodley-Bullock House, barbeque, and bourbon.

Transylvania University’s Carrick Theatre will host the Wild Women of Poetry Slam as a part of the Kentucky Women Writers Conference. The Slam will start at 6:30 pm and will include headliner and celebrity judge Ellen Hagan and emcee Bianca Spriggs.

The Japan Summer Fest that drew more than 12,000 people in 2013 will be back at the Courthouse Plaza this year. There will be games, food, performances, and Japanese culture.

The Lexington Children’s Theatre presents Miss Nelson is Missing at 2 pm.

The 8th Annual Rain Garden Tour will take place at the Meadowthorpe community center from 2 – 5 pm. Participants will tour several residential rain gardens. There will be speakers, booths, and refreshments at the community center.

At 7 pm, the Carnegie Center will host Stars with Accents readings by Leatha Kendrick, Paulette Livers, and Lisa Williams. Katerina Stoykova-Klemer will moderate.

ScareFest 2014 will be in the Lexington Convention Center the weekend of September 12 – September 14. Sunday times are 11 am – 4 pm.

There will be a film screening and discussion of Inequality For All at the Farish Theater at 6 pm, sponsored by Central Kentucky Council for Peace and Justice.

Woodsongs: Joshua James and Neulore perform at the Lyric Theater at 7 pm.

TUESDAY Sep 16, 2014

New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison discusses and signs The Witch with No Name at Joseph-Beth at noon.

The Farish Theatre at the Central Library will show The Perks of Being a Wallflower at 7 pm.

WEDNESDAY Sep 17, 2014

The Farish Theater at the Central Library presents Balagula Theater’s Drinking in America. Performances are scheduled to begin at 7 pm September 17-19.

The 2014 Rosa Goddard Film Festival, an annual celebration of cinema classics, presents Jaromil Jires’s Valerie and Her Week of Wonders at the Kentucky Theatre at 7:15 pm.

Gaelic Storm perform at EKU Center for the Arts at 7:30 pm.

At 8 pm, Red Barn Radio presents Australian band Bluegrass Parkway’s US Tour at ArtsPlace.
