Lex Gains Dubious Achievement recognition in "Preservation"

The National Trust for Historic Preservation’s magazine, Preservation, has named the loss of the Dame block as one of the worst preservation losses for 2008.

They write, “The oldest building in downtown Lexington, Ky., along with 13 other historic structures, was torn down this year. The city officials approved plans for a 40-story hotel that developer CentrePointe, LLC wants to become the state’s first LEED-certified high-rise. But dumping 14 buildings in a landfill isn’t exactly green; ‘the greenest building is the one that’s already built.'” The other worst losses cited for 2008 are the recession’s effects in Philadelphia, Illinois and California, Hurricane Ike, fires in Southern California, the demolition of Tiger and Yankee stadiums, and the closing of Coney Island.
