Beginning as a solo acoustic act in the DC area, Alex Vans has two previous releases; a self-titled debut and the 2010 EP Old Souls & Other Cellar Songs. A Deli Magazine Artist of the Month, Alex Vans is joined by his backing band The Hide Away on the road, which includes Joe Burcaw (from Black 47s) on bass and Jaron Mossman on drums.

March 8th celebrates twenty-five years of noncommercial college radio over the air in Lexington and on UK’s campus!
The party begins at 8pm at Al’s Bar and next door at Al’s Sidecar, bands featuring WRFL with bands featuring WRFL DJs past and present for a free, two-venue concert.

GIGS: Donora, Al’s Bar
Pittsburgh indie pop trio Donora will celebrate their new EP Play Nice (Rostrum Records) on Saturday, February 9th at Al’s Bar in Lexington.
Donora released their sophomore album Boyfriends, Girlfriends in 2011 on Rostrum Records. They were featured that year in Nylon Magazine’s Pittsburgh spotlight, and in 2012 as one of Paste Magazine’s 11 Pennsylvania Bands To Listen To Now.

Holler 56 features the debuts of John James, Academy of American Poets Prize winner and Bellarmine professor and J. Kates, poet, literary translator and the president and co-director of Zephyr Press (his chapbook Metes and Bounds was published by Lexington’s Accents Publishing). Scott Whiddon, the front man for Lexington rock band Palisades, will provide the music.
Open mic starts at 8pm, signups begin at 7pm.
