WoodSongs: New Riders of the Purple Sage and Charlie Parr play at the Lyric Theatre at 6:45 pm on Monday, June 29.
"NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE have been called the Greatest Cosmic, Psychedelic Country Rock and Roll Band Of The Universe. They began as a spin-off from the Grateful Dead when Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart teamed up with John Dawson and David Nelson. The band signed to Columbia Records by Clive Davis, released its first album in September 1971 to widespread acclaim. In the next 11 years the band toured and released over 12 albums, selling over 4 million records. The current lineup includes founding member David Nelson, pedal steel wizard Buddy Cage (Bob Dylan & Anne Murray), Michael Falzarano (Hot Tuna), Johnny Markowski (Stir Fried) and Ron Penque (JGB, Vassar Clements, and Peter Rowan). The band recently teamed up with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter and released two albums to rave reviews, ‘Where I Come From’ and ’17 Pine Avenue’.
CHARLIE PARR is a roots musician like no other today. The Minnesota musician has built a frenzied following of fans around the world with his energetic performances and 12 records. On his 13th album and Red House Records debut, ‘Stumpjumper’, Charlie showcases his blistering finger-picking as he switches between acoustic guitar, dobro and banjo — and keening, cut-through-the-crowd vocals that resonate with a conviction that runs deep and true."
