Music: Outside the Spotlight, Mecca Dance Studio

January 16, 2015 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

The Outside The Spotlight Music Series at Mecca Dance Studio features Ken Vandermark and Nate Wooley at 8 pm on January 16.

“Ken Vandermark ( Chicago), winner of the 1999 MacArthur Fellowship, is best known for a composition style that blends intricate orchestration with improvisation. Vandermark’s works range from more traditional Jazz performance to irreverently non-traditional Jazz explorations. Vandermark is best known for creating the pioneering jazz ensemble, The Vandermark 5, and his recent ensembles and collaborations include Audio One and Made to Break.

Jazz trumpeter Nate Wooley’s (New York) music ranges from traditional jazz to experimental improvisation. An Oregon-native, he draws inspiration from his Pacific-Northwestern roots to create a sound that is rich, challenging, and wholly unique. Wooley utilizes negative space in his performance to incorporate breathy, anxious interludes between almost animalistic tones. His performances in the Free Jazz, Noise, and Avant-Garde scenes have included him in extensive collaborations with artists such as John Zorn, Anthony Braxton, Eliane Radigue, Peter Evans, and Mary Halvorsen.”
