The 5th Anniversary of the Lyric Summer Film Series presents Lilies of the Field (1963) on July 10 at 3 pm at the Lyric Theatre.
"Almost 70 years from our original opening date, the Lyric Theatre have patrons coming into the facility, reminiscing of afternoons spent, popcorn in hand, watching cartoons and movies at the historic Lyric Theatre. It is this nostalgia that sparked the free Lyric Summer Film Series in 2012, celebrating the gathering place that the original Lyric was for the East End and giving our current generation this slice of the past.
Being the icon The Lyric was and remains to be in the African American community, these films focused on honoring the monumental achievements of African Americans in film.
As they enter our 5th year of the Summer Film Series, the Lyric Theatre wanted the selections to bridge the gap between the classics and films coming out today, much as The Lyric seeks to honor it's nostalgic roots while moving forward to rise to new heights. These films not only highlight the extraordinary talent of African American actors, directors, & musicians in the world of film, but show common thematic connections that span generations and continue to inspire, embolden, and empower."
