A Matter of Time

The ideaFestival Institute announces the kickoff of its time warp film series! The movie, 12 Monkeys, starring Bruce Willis, will be shown FREE Thursday evening, April 25, at the Central Library Theatre at 7 pm. This Film Festival series, leads up to the 2002 ideaFestival that will be held in this fall. The movies will all be centered around this year's ideaFestival Theme, "A Matter of Time."

Upcoming movies include: Memento, Contact, Groundhog Day, Run Lola Run, and the original The Time Machine. Each showing will be followed by an informal conversation led by Matt Mulcahey, a film critic for Ace Weekly, and will involve a small panel of scientists, film enthusiasts, artists and others who will discuss the different techniques and ideas expressed in each movie and its relationship to the concept of "time". Go ahead and book it

Like books? Like books at bargain prices? Like books at bargain prices when the proceeds go to the public library? Then don't miss this year's Friends of the Lexington Public Library Booksale. Thousands of books covering most genres of prose and verse will continue to be available for hoarding through the weekend. Who knows? A hawk's eye could uncover first editions of Stephen King's Carrie or a complete collections of Danielle Steele romances. Eighty-five percent of the books offered for sale have been donated privately; the rest are library discards. "When?" you ask, rubbing your palms together greedily: Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. "Where?" you inquire, glancing around to ensure no one is listening: The lower level of the Central Library. -J.R.

Breathe easy

For those with breathing problems that can be exacerbated by things such as pollution (isn't that everyone?), you will now be able to get a heads up on the air quality in Lexington. Beginning May 1st and continuing through September 30th, a report on the air quality for the next day will be available of the Mobility Office web page, www.lfucg.com/ozone. Should there be an overbundance of pollution in the air for a particluar day, an Ozone Action Day will be declared.

(Also: the Urban County Council has formed a Task Force to investigate making public spaces in Lexington smoke-free - this would include restaurants.)
