University of Kentucky students have taken on a cause that is oh, so close to their hearts - but don't confuse this movement with any recent surges in activism. This is not a protest of sweatshops, a sit-in for peace, or a march for the migrant workers of Turduckestan. The current movement leaves altruism to the tree huggers. These students are taking a lesson from the Beastie Boys and fighting for a privilege inherent to all college students: the right to party. Having declared war on the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council, UK Student Government President Tim Robinson and other students have presented an alternative proposal in place of the Council's much-maligned party plan. The student-proposal is heavier on community service - lighter on fines and punishments. On Tuesday, the Council dismissed the alternative, and moved to send the Lexington Area Party Plan to a full vote (officially) at the December 6th council meeting. Fanning the Flames of Romance

Looking for a date? Stop by the Blue Moon Saloon Thursday, November 29th at 9pm for a bachelor auction sponsored by 92.1FM and Toys for Tots. Lexington firefighters will be on the block looking to feed the flame, instead of dousing it. These hunks of burning love will go to highest bidder complete with a dinner for two at the Homestead. Males, however, will not be left out of the bidding wars; female firefighters will be strutting their stuff looking to raise the interest and bids of the male contingent in the audience. So make sure to bring your libido as well as your checkbook to this meat market as all proceeds will go to the Toys for Tots program. For more information call 268-0001.

World AIDS Day

Just in time for the holidays, AVOL is hosting a Sextravaganza: an all-ages event aimed at promoting safe sex, AIDS and HIV awareness and the talents of some of Lexington's musically and artistically inclined youth, who are, incidentally, the most at risk group for HIV contraction. The event will take place Sunday, December 2nd at Blue Maxx in observance of World AIDS Day (which is Saturday).

From 4-11pm, audiences can enjoy the fruits of AVOL's networking and planning in the form of jazz, punk and hip hop groups, performance poetry, and art. The show will kick off with an hour of performance poetry and open mic time and proceed into an eclectic mix of music from groups Bliss On Tap, Summer Melts Faster, Southeast Clique and Sub-Terrain.
