Town and Gown

Students had an opportunity Monday night to express themselves on the "Lexington Area Party Plan."

The Urban County Council is scheduled to vote on the Plan at their December 6 meeting.

Students, by and large, have been opposed to it.

The proposal is the latest skirmish in an ongoing battle between UK students and residents who live in neighborhoods bordering the university (and have frequent complaints about the attendant noise and trash that accompanies student parties).

Scary Stats

According to a new study by the Department for Employment Services, Kentucky's unemployment rate jumped to five percent in October from 4.4 percent in September.

This is the highest unemployment rate for this time of year since the 5.5 percent unemployment rate in 1996.

It's important to note that unemployment statistics are normally gathered by counting the number of people who file for unemployment benefits. This is interesting because many people who are jobless do not or cannot file for unemployment benefits. This is especially true for "under the table" workers, which Kentucky has a number of. The data says 5 percent, but the real figure could be much higher.
