THURSDAY Sep 4, 2014

Actors Guild stages  The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity  at 8 pm, Thursday through this weekend. Chad Deity, a 2010 Pulitzer Prize finalist, has been hailed by the New York Times as having “the delicious crackle and pop of a galloping, honest-to-God, all-American satire.” Starring Whit Whitaker, Stakar Fripp, and Ruda Tovar.

Prime Cut play at Cheapside Park for Thursday Night Live at 5 pm.

Lyle Lovett and his Large Band perform at EKU Center for the Arts at 7:30 pm.

The Terrapin Hill Harvest Festival runs from September 4th through September 7th. More than a dozen bands perform, and this year’s theme is the Wild Wild West.

FRIDAY Sep 5, 2014

The Lexington Roots and Heritage Festival is this weekend. The annual festival has been recognized as a Top Ten Festival in Kentucky, and this year, Nellie “Tiger” Travis and Lakeside are the headliners.

Kentucky legend Chris Knight returns to Buster’s at 9 pm.

The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus comes to Rupp Arena from September 5th to September 7th. The show starts at 7 pm on Friday and throughout the day Saturday and Sunday.

Jimmy Pardo will perform at Comedy Off Broadway September 5th and 6th. Shows begin 7:15 pm and 9:45 pm both nights.

The 2013 Dog Paddle.

Lexington’s annual Dog Paddle will run 9 am – 3 pm at Woodland Park Pool. Owners are invited to bring their dogs out for the last swim of the season (sorry humans; you’ll need to stay out of the pool).

UK Art Museum will feature three new art exhibits, beginning September 6. Kurt Vonnegut: Madmen and Moonbeams showcases drawings the novelist made throughout his life. Laurel Nakadate: Strangers & Relations explores casual and intimate relationships through photographs, video, and film. Take My Word For It brings together numerous text-based works to examine how language directly engages the audience. All of the exhibits will be on display until December 23rd.

UK football faces off against Ohio University at Commonwealth Stadium at 3:30 pm.

Black Jacket Symphony perform at the Lexington Opera House at 8 pm. They will cover Fleetwood Mac’s album Rumours.

SUNDAY Sep 7, 2014

There will be a performance of Jeff Stetson’s one act play, “The Meeting,” at the Farish Theatre at 3 pm. The setting for this fictitious conversation between Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a hotel room a week before MLK’s fatal speech at the Audubon ballroom. Additional performances September 4th and 5th at 7pm and September 6th at 3 pm.

John Wilkerson will host an afternoon tea salon at the Thomas January House (1810) from 2:30 – 5:30 pm as a part of Moveable Feast Lexington’s Sunday Salons in September. As a part of the salon, Maryjean Wall will present her new book, Madam Belle, and Brooklyn-based Laura Smith will exhibit her recent Direction and Disintegration. As part of the Lexington Roots & Heritage Festival, the Lyric Theatre will host the Roots & Heritage Festival Gospel Show, starting at 1 pm.

MONDAY Sep 8, 2014

Ellis Paul and Socks in the Frying Pan play at the Lyric Theater at 6:45 pm as a part of Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour.

TUESDAY Sep 9, 2014

On the Verge presents an immersive adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing at Central Christian Church on September 9th and 10th at 7 pm.

The Farish Theatre will show Catch-22 at 7 pm as a part of the Banned Books on Film series.

Coralee and The Townies will play in-store at CD Central at 7 pm, celebrating their new album Criminal Pride.

WEDNESDAY Sep 10, 2014

And last, but most definitely not least, The Black Keys headline what may be the most action-packed Wednesday in a while. The Black Keys will rock the KFC Yum! Center at 8 pm along with special guests and Kentucky favorites Cage The Elephant.

The inaugural Jefferson Street Soirée is scheduled for 6 – 10 pm on Jefferson Street, between Short and Second. Over a dozen locally owned businesses, from white tablecloth dining to eclectic music venues, will offer food and beverage tastings. Artists including Lexington’s own Tee Dee Young will perform on a stage between The Grey Goose and Wine + Market.

But that’s not all: short story writer, novelist, and Dos Passos Prize recipient Jill McCorkle will read poetry at the UK Art Museum at 8 pm.

Also, the Kentucky Theatre will show Alain Resnais’s Last Year at Marienbad at 7:15 pm, as  part of the 2014 Rosa Goddard Film Festival, an annual celebration of cinema classics presented by the Kentucky Theatre.

To top it off, Humble Tripe will play at ArtsPlace at 8 pm as a part of Red Barn Radio.
