Ace Picks: Lexington KY Calendar of Events Jan 3 thru Jan 10, 2013

[three_fifth]

Welcome to this week’s Ace Picks for Lexington, Kentucky — Ace’s highly curated and selective to do list for the next eight days in the bluegrass (also delivered to your inbox every Thursday morning via the Ace e-dition click here to subscribe.)

THURSDAY JANUARY 3, 2013

Paul K plays at Cosmic Charlie’s. (Read Kakie Urch’s recent coverstory here.)

FRIDAY JANUARY 4, 2013

Joseph G. Anthony will discuss and sign Bluegrass Funeral at Joseph Beth Booksellers, short stories about Kentucky’s bluegrass region from the 1800s to the present.

SATURDAY JANUARY 5, 2013

Preservation Kentucky is this month’s cause at West Sixth on Saturday. The brewery will donate six percent of their profits that afternoon, 4 pm to 8 pm, to Preservation Kentucky. Other activities will include a short bike tour of the neighborhood (weather depending) and craft training demonstrations.

Ballroom with a Twist‘ is at the Lexington Opera House this weekend, featuring dancers from Dancing with the Stars.

SUNDAY JANUARY 6, 2013

It was a year ago this week that perennial candidate and activist Gatewood Galbraith died. Friends and fans will gather at Natasha’s Sunday evening for a remembrance. Blind Corn Liquor Pickers will play to close out the evening.

Galbraith famously told Ace in a 2000 interview about industrial hemp’s potential as a crop for Kentucky, “Cannabis is to hemp as Dennis Rodman is to Danny DeVito. They’re both adult males, but if you can’t distinguish between the two you don’t belong in law enforcement.”

Read the January 2012 essay from John Y Brown III on Gatewood’s passing here.

MONDAY JANUARY 7, 2013

Woodsongs arrives at its new home at Lexington’s Lyric Theatre with what is sure to be an incredible performance by Victor Wooten and family. (The uninitiated might know the virtuoso bassist from his longtime work with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.)

This show has been rescheduled to February.

TUESDAY JANUARY 8, 2013

Exile (“I Wanna Kiss you all over…and over again…”) will perform at the EKU Center for the Arts this evening.

WEDNESDAY JANUARY 9, 2013

Tonight’s Red Barn Radio, the first of 2013, is Mike Mitchell.

THURSDAY JANUARY 10, 2013

Studio Players will premiere their first show of 2013, Southern Comforts.

Tonight’s Jazz Live at the Library is a Tribute to Norman Higgins, featuring the Jay Flippin Trio.

Fantastical Theatricals will present “Murder at the Shell Cafe,” at the Chop House on Richmond Road. (6:30 pm on January 10 and on January 17, 2013). From their invitation, “The year is 1940, and Orson Welles is on his way to Hearst Castle with a gun in his pocket, followed by his jealous lover, Dolores del Rio. At the Shell Café in Pismo Beach, California, they encounter Marion Davies, Charlie Chaplin, and Louella Parsons. Two Hollywood scandals collide with hilarious and murderous results in this fictional blend of history, mystery and comedy.”
