THURSDAY NOVEMBER 1, 2012

If you thought the costumes had been put away after Halloween, you might be startled to see another brightly garbed parade of walkers downtown — it’s  the annual Day of the Dead, Living Arts and Science Center.

Traffic notes: what time is the UK Game? Alltech’s National Horse Show is this week.

The opening reception for Amended Artifiacts at Institute 193 is also this evening. UK Jazz Ensemble is at the Singletary Center.

In theatre, Actors Guild’s production of David Mamet’s November opens tonight, and The Liar continues this weekend at Transy.

Gigs include 2 Live Crew at Cosmic Charlie’s and Radney Foster at Natasha’s.

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 2, 2012

Couldn’t get enough Day of the Dead? Bluegrass Youth Ballet presents Dia de Los Muertos at Lexington Opera House and Smoke and Mirrors is at the Downtown Arts Center.

Don’t forget the time change! You get an extra hour of frivolity.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 3, 2012

Where else but Lexington, Kentucky could you wake up to  the annual Blessing of the Hounds at the Iroquois Hunt Club and end the day with a road trip to the KFC Yum Center for Springsteen?

Traffic notes: UK vs. Vandy.

Comedy: Ron White performs at UK’s Singletary Center.

Maybach Music Group is at Rupp Arena.

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 4, 2012

Longtime Ace favorite David Sedaris is at UK’s Singletary Center. We do our best to lay claim to Sedaris around here as his mother-in-law is reportedly from Kentucky.

[amazon asin=0316154687&template=iframe image]From When You Are Engulfed in Flames,

“When Maw Hamrick’s around, I don’t lift a finger. All my chores go automatically to her, and I just sit in a rocker, raising my feet every now and then so she can pass the vacuum. It’s incredibly relaxing, but it doesn’t make me look very good, especially if she’s doing something strenuous, carrying furniture to the basement, for instance, which again, was completely her idea. I just mentioned in passing that we rarely used the dresser, and that one of these days someone should take it downstairs. I didn’t mean her, exactly, though at age seventy-six she’s a lot stronger than Hugh gives her credit for. Coming from Kentucky, she’s used to a hard day’s work. Choppin’, totin’, all those activities with a dropped g: the way I figure it, these things are in her genes.”

MONDAY NOVEMBER 5, 2012

Artwork by Derrick Riley

Printmaking in the Bluegrass opens in Transy’s Morlan Gallery today, featuring some of our favorite local artists (like Johnny Lackey) working in some of our favorite media.

TUESDAY NOVEMBER 6, 2012

[amazon asin=0062124269&template=iframe image]Kentucky native Barbara Kingsolver’s new novel Flight Behavior is in bookstores today. (She makes an appearance at Joseph Beth later in November.)

Today’s the big day: VOTE!

And just a friendly reminder, no liquor sales while the polls are open (6 am to 6 pm), so if you’re planning a giant celebration, you might want to shop Monday.

WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 7, 2012

Two big chats in town tonight, wildly different.

WVLK presents an Evening with Joe B. Hall as part of their 65th anniversary programming (happy birthday, folks!)

UK presents Forecastle Festival founder, JK McKnight.

Ace Picks and calendar recommendations for Lexington are  compiled from the aceweekly.com Lexington, KY calendar by Mic Hardman, with Chris Snider. Click to submit.
