Nobody Panic: Blue Grass Army Depot Simulation

Lexington Emergency Management, Fire, Police, and other government agencies, health providers are participating in the annual Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program (CSEPP) exercise beginning this morning, simulating an accident at the nearby Blue Grass Army Depot involving munitions that contain chemical agents.

Earlier this Summer, the prospective destruction of the chemical weapons arsenal at the depot encountered another delay. Chemical agents stored at the depot include munitions typically known as mustard gas and nerve agents.

During the early ’90s, incinerators were planned to destroy the stockpile, but the community raised serious questions and concerns about both safety and viability.

A simulated reception/decontamination/triage facility is set up at Jacobson Park.
