Ace Picks: Lexington Calendar for Sep 20 thru Sep 27, 2012

This weekend offers an absolute embarrassment of riches for things to do in Lexington, Kentucky. Boomslang, Gallery Hop, the Kentucky Women Writers Conference, and Oktoberfest are all happening at the same time, but if you plan judiciously and consult the aceweekly.com calendar regularly, you should be able to make a substantial dent in Lexington’s cultural landscape this weekend.

In the quiet moments, if you can find any, you will also want to pause and read the new book, Will Oldham on Bonnie Prince Billy; check out the new CD from veteran Lexington songwriter Paul K; have a donut at the Saturday Grand Opening of North Lime Coffee and Donuts; and drop in to the Kentucky Theatre to see Killer Joe The Master or Sleepwalk with Me.

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 20, 2012

WRFL and UK present Boomslang, kicking off Thursday with Jeff Mangum at the Kentucky Theatre. Boomslang’s late show will be Das Racist at Cosmic Charlie’s. Raj Ranade has previewed this year’s lineup on page 12 in print, and here. Check back often for his Live Coverage. (You can read more of Raj’s Summer 2012 Pitchfork Festival coverage here, including his interview with the late Bill Doss of the Olivia Tremor Control.)

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 21 2012
The great thing about Gallery Hop? So much incredible art to see in a few hours in Lexington. The nightmare thing about Gallery Hop? So much incredible art to see in a two-hour span! It’s a tough field to choose from this Friday, but we hope you’ll kick off the Hop with the Ace crew and Rideout Photography at West Sixth Brewing, at the corner of Jefferson and West Sixth, for the Second Shot: Cameras for a Cause one-night-only pop up gallery. Every donor to this campaign will get their photo snapped by the incredible Rideout Photography duo, so make this your first stop — when you still look all fresh and sparkly. Conveniently located next door (also in the Bread Box building), Cricket Press is curating a poster show that’s also a Must See, No Greater Task: Art and Activism for Appalachia. And downtown, the Art League is having an Art pARTy at Cheapside Square.

by John Vogl (Art and Activism for Appalachia, Gallery Hop)

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 22, 2012
It will be hard to find a prettier fall afternoon than Oktoberfest on the Christ the King campus. Walk off the brats and dogs by heading over to Chevy Chase for the Empty Bowls project benefiting Moveable Feast. (Your donation gets you a one-of-a-kind bowl, so even if you’re not hungry, stop in for the Art and a good cause.)

Also in the great-eating-for-a-great-cause category is HarvestFest, benefiting Seedleaf.

Saturday evening, one of the first ladies of food, Ruth Reichl, will deliver the keynote address at this year’s Kentucky Women Writers Conference.

And while Boomslang is definitely the big music news this weekend, Jim Lauderdale will wrap up Oktoberfest at 9:30 Saturday night, and is a longtime Ace favorite. (If you like Elvis Costello with a dash of George Jones — or vice versa — you will love Jim Lauderdale.)

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 23, 2012
The Jesus and Mary Chain wrap up Boomslang.

Tremé‘s third season premieres Sunday, September 23 on HBO. Keep an eye on the credits this season. Kentucky native and author Chris Offutt has penned Episode 6 (following up successful turns on HBO’s True Blood and Showtime’s Weeds).
