There’s nothing on the schedule for the 2010 Lexington Fest of Ales this Friday (5 pm to 9 pm, Cheapside Square) that suggests they’ll be frying any beer there.
It probably hasn’t occurred to anyone, but fortunately alert Ace Contributing Writer (and craft ale connoisseur) Andrew Wyllie discovered this Dallas Morning News Report*:
“If Big Tex looks a little glassy-eyed this fall, blame it on the Fried Beer. Or the Deep Fried Frozen Margarita. Booze is generating a buzz for the State Fair of Texas as fried-alcohol dishes made the list of top new fair foods.”
Wyllie’s response was, “just think, in other countries they actually have to use a glass to drink their Guinness – how primitive.”
The report goes on to explain “The Deep Fried Frozen Margarita includes a funnel cake batter mixed with either tequila or tequila-flavored wine, dusted with margarita mix and served in a salt-rimmed plastic glass.” [Emphasis added.] Last year’s winning entry at the Texas State Fair was fried butter (“popularized” by Oprah). Fried beer creator Mark Zable suffered multiple burns on the route to perfecting his fried beer recipe. He now, “keeps the process shrouded in secrecy and has applied for a Fried Beer patent and trademark.”
Participating breweries at Friday’s Lexington Fest of Ales include: Stone Brewing Company; New Holland Brewing; Founders Brewing; Brooklyn Brewery; Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales; Left Hand Brewing Company; Goose Island; Sierra Nevada; Great Lakes; Wittekerke; Westmalle; Troubadour; Samuel Smith; Lindeman’s; Ayinger; Arcadia Ales; Stella Artois; Magic Hat; Kentucky Ale; and more.
